Intriguing story that pulls you in from the beginning. It is ultimately a love story between two neighbors (Peter and Kate). They come from different families but Peter's mom, Anne, has a mental disorder and shoots Kate's dad. She ends up in a psychiatric hospital for many years before being released. During this time Peter and Kate end up going through life together, marrying at a young age, and having 2 children. Peter decides to become a cop just like his dad but ends up being forced to retire as he develops a drinking problem and fires his gun accidentally on the job. He then becomes a school teacher.
