OK! The tallies this time are: 10 counts of calling people "slut" or "ho," 4 counts of calling people "hag," 4 counts of weird remarks surrounding being gay, 3 counts of saying someone is a "loser," and 2 unnecessary and judgy teen moments. Look at that! More growth!
So far, this is the best book in the House of Night series by a wide margin, which . . . isn't saying too much, but hey, it deserves its place at the top of the pile for now. Zoey is finally learning to be a decent person, finally using her brain, and finally worrying about her actual problems instead of her perceived ones. Good for her!
The story (the plot) is interesting and unique enough. The characters across the board are improving even if their dialogue leaves something to be desired. The writing hasn't really improved though; it's still very basic and surface level, even for YA.
