The Summer You Found Me by Elizabeth O'Roark

5.0

This story is so stunningly thoughtful, incredibly touching and has so much emotional depth. It took me on a painful yet beautiful journey with such wonderful, multifaceted characters.
What I love most about the story is that Beck is immediately an immensely likable character, while Kate is not. She’s messy and does things that are morally wrong.
I love the way her story unfolds and how it made me use compassion to understand her. I love flawed characters, I also love characters that can love them, see the whole person and accept them.
Beck is such a special man, the way he’s able to help Kate and still call her out on her B.S. is fantastic. He’s not a doormat and he knows when to push and when to be gentle. He doesn’t excuse or ignore her bad behavior. His emotional awareness and the way he cares deeply make him insanely attractive.
This story is (amongst many things) about overcoming loss, addiction and being honest with yourself about what will bring you true happiness.
♡︎And obviously, it’s about love.♡︎
There are so many ups and downs between Beck and Kate, I reveled in their raw, honest conversations. I love their friendship and their lighter moments, there’s so much struggle and pain that the humor and happy times were so satisfying. Their sharp banter is so fun and taut with longing and passion.
✦ I think this author writes the absolute best banter ever! ✦
The romance is unique, the characters are coming at it with different intentions. It’s tangled and painful, at times frustrating. There’s real angst and it’s deliciously hot and butterfly inducing. The uncertainty and pain are balanced by so much unexpected big heart.
This is a must read for romance readers who love something unique, written with intelligence and compassion. It’s my favorite book of the year. I give it all the stars.
