Go Ask Alice by Beatrice Sparks

2.25 maybe?

I don’t know if I’d be able to review this book if it were an actual diary, but given the fact that it’s most likely a work of fiction, I’ll say I didn’t think it was very good.

For a book that pretends to be a real diary of a teenager, it’s quite unrealistic in it’s writing. I felt like I was reading about an adult impersonating a teenage girl: trying to be overly enthusiastic, having mood-swings every second, being very superficial etc. The narrator had very intense firendships for 2-3 months, then completely forgot about their supposed “bff”.

At no point did this book strike me as real and that wasn’t because of the extreme drug problem or the plot, but because of the narrator’s voice and her attitude.

The attitude towards lgbtq+ people and issues also rubbed me the wrong way, but I guess I’ll give it a pass given that it wasn’t too agressive and the book was published almost 50 years ago.

All the bad things aside, it was a fast read and I did somewhat enjoy reading it so it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
