Normal People by Sally Rooney

I really wanted to like this book, but at the end of the day I have to say, that I absolutely couldn‘t connect with Normal People. Reading this was exhausting and frustrating. Marianne and Connell are immature, pretentious, „not like other girls people“, co-dependent and supposedly understand each other on an almost spiritual level, having interests in political conflicts etc unlike their peers, but are completely incapabale of having an actual intimate conversation with each other about the most basic aspects of their lives or their thoughts and feelings. I had huge problems with the miscommunication or rather the complete lack of any kind of communication, and was rolling my eyes at the end of the book, when they were bascially back to the beginning, with no character growth or any other notable changes.

Sally Rooney‘s writing style was also something I couldn‘t vibe with. The missing quotation marks were irritating at first and while it was something I could get used to, I still didn‘t like it. The detailed descriptions of how people move was also very randomly weird and felt almost disruptive at some points.
