River of the Gods: Genius, Courage, and Betrayal in the Search for the Source of the Nile by Candice Millard

informative medium-paced

3.0

Candice Millard is a great researcher and storyteller, but I found this story in particular lacking. The two main characters, Richard Burton and John Speke, are so deeply flawed that it was difficult to care about them or their exploration of the Nile. I feel as though the author missed an opportunity to write more about Africa and the Nile itself or an individual who has been lost to history like Sidi Mubarak Bombay who was overshadowed by these two lackluster explorers.
