Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family by Amy Ellis Nutt

emotional hopeful informative medium-paced

5.0

I thought this was so well done by weaving Nicole’s story with legal and scientific information and how Nicole’s transition helped impact legislation at a local level.

If you have knowledge of trans issues, this won’t be groundbreaking new information, rather I think you’ll be more invested in the legal issues that faced Nicole and her family. If you’re starting your trans issue journey, this is a great place to start as it’s so simply laid out without being overly complicated.

Although the ending is hopeful and inspiring, I really appreciated how we see how Wayne (Nicole’s father, a previously conservative war-vet) initially struggled with accepting having a trans child to ultimately becoming one of her biggest advocates being a true trans activist.  The Maines are a family everyone should role model after, and unfortunately while the reality is that not every family is as supportive as the Maines, their story can help shed a light on the journey to being supportive.
