Crush the King by Jennifer Estep

4.0

I love reading Jennifer Estep books because they're always easy reads that are just about fun escapism. This book in particular reminds me a lot of Estep's flagship series, ELEMENTAL ASSASSIN. The characters are fun and the action is engaging. The world feels very familiar and lived in, even with its creatures and the hints of magic.

The story had some great moments with assassination attempts, traps, and clever plans. With this, there were some excellent action scenes with magic and sword battles. Evie remained a strong character, even when she worked on shady plots to become extremely powerful. There were great moments between her and other characters like Paloma (one of my favourites), and Serilda (who should have a series of her own). As always, the villains were quite evil, but some had some surprising depth, and things were not so black and white as Evie might have believed.

This series has been a fun read and I recommend it to anyone looking for a fun escape!
