The Way of Kings is a grand epic tale that will sweep you along with it if you get caught up in it even a little!

Sanderson’s first book in his Stormlight Archive series epitomizes epic fantasy - with all the highs and lows that come with that. The world building is immense, full of rich flavour and deep mysteries. The shadowside of this is that it takes a while before you have any idea what’s going on. For fans of big sweeping epics, this slow unveiling of plot and world is taken in stride, and truthfully is excellently done - but I can understand how those new to the genre might struggle to get into the book. That said, as a fan who is well versed in the series and broader cosmere universe, the innumerable little easter eggs, hints, and setups are deeply deeply satisfying to find on my reread of the series!

Once in, however, the story builds momentum and doesn’t let up. It’s the kind of story where you always want to read another chapter. This all culminates with the classic “sanderlanche” - a full steam ahead, emotionally charged, roller coaster of a climax. The first time I read this book I finished it at 3am reading by flashlight, just fully caught up in the finale. On reread, it was just as captivating and exhilarating.

Sanderson will have you falling in love or deeply hating his characters. It’s a mark of great character work that you have deep feelings for every main and most secondary characters. The plot keep you coming back for more, but the characters are what make you really care. They are what drives the triumph and tragedy within these pages.

The Way of Kings is an excellent beginning to Sanderson’s hallmark epic fantasy series. It’s hugely popular, and there is a very good reason why!
