Lovesick Gods by Amanda Meuwissen

4.0

This book was such a page-turner, I could not put it down. It also ends on something of a cliffhanger, so I would really advise people to make sure you've purchased both books in this series before you start reading, because trust me when I say you'll want to immediately continue with the second book to know what happens next!

The world that the author has created is so creative and exciting! I appreciate how she expertly weaves the worldbuilding elements into the narrative, so that it doesn't disturb the flow of the story, but you still get the info you need to understand the world the characters inhabit.

Speaking of the characters, they're complex and fascinating, especially the two main characters Danny and Mal (although the supporting cast is made up of unique and interesting characters, too)! In each scene, you discover another layer to them and their relationship, and it's so easy to get completely swept away in the raw emotion that Danny especially often displays. You really learn to care for these characters deeply by the end of the first book.
Gentle content warning here that both books deal quite frankly with mental health issues, but in a really empathetic, realistic way. I was deeply touched by the way Danny's struggles were portrayed.

You learn more about the villain(s) in the next book, but even in this one he/she/they already feel very menacing and like a real, credible threat which does a great job introducing mystery and real stakes.

The smut is really the best kind of smut there is (to me): not only is it scorching hot, it also furthers the relationship and thus has a narrative purpose. Really, there is no "gratuitous smut" in this story, in my opinion.

All in all, this book really blew me away and I enjoyed every moment of reading it. Highly recommended!
