I might be becoming a historical romance girlie. Luz Alana is a half-Dominican, half-Scottish woman that left Santo Domingo with three hundred casks of rum and an ambition to expand her family's rum into a successful venture on her own.  James Evanston Sinclair, also known as Evan for most of the book, is the Earl of Darnick that is determined to build a whisky brand outside of his father's tainted money.

I loved Luz and Evan as main characters. Luz had such depth and personality, especially as an Afro-Caribbean woman determined to go into business on her own. Although the circumstances that drew them together for a marriage of convenience were unfavorable, Evan was very open and willing to care for Luz as if she was his true wife.

I loved the discussion about colonialism and slavery and its lasting impact on the Caribbean. Evan was constantly willing to listen and validate Luz's concerns regarding her place in the world and her direction for the distillery.

I'm looking forward to reading the upcoming stories with the Las Leonas!
