Mystery Walk by Robert R. McCammon

4.0

“Expect the unexpected, always.”

Mystery Walk by Robert McCammon tells the story of two individuals where one has the ability to talk to the dead and the other can heal living things. Billy hears his first whisper from the dead from a house in which a family were murdered and Wayne at a revival meeting displays his incredible powers of healing. Both have a connection and discover in adulthood the rage that one has for the other. As fate would have it, they will meet and against all evil odds they will go head to head with the sinister being that is known as the shape changer.

This was my buddy read with Laura for this month. As ever we were ready to dive straight into this story and see what it was about.

The story begins with so much intensity and a lot is shared about Billy Creekmore’s mother Ramona. Her relationship with his father and the way she is treated both in her relationship and society. Similarly a picture is painted on Wayne Falconer and his evangelist father’s influence over him. This is a continued theme throughout the story. The influence and prejudice of others and how these powers the boys hold have a greater meaning and passage they must take known as the mystery walk.

I thought the story was steady paced and kept unveiling one twist after the next. I always find McCammon’s novels to have that addictive feel to them and the imagery he uses to portray the supernatural and horror are disturbing and anxiety inducing.

There were several people and events to keep up with so at times I had to back track a little but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and would happily read more on the life of Billy Creekmore.
