A Million Kisses in Your Lifetime by Monica Murphy

3.0

Crew has been fascinated by the very innocent Wren ever since she arrived at the prep school owned by his family. Wren is a good girl through and through, and disapproves of Crew and his poor behaviour. But when they’re partnered together for a psychology class, they start to see another side to each other.

Honestly, I have quite mixed feelings about this book. I did enjoy reading it - the author has a knack I think for drawing the reader in. It’s really engaging and even though it is very long it didn’t feel it to me. I liked Wren - Crew was harder for me to warm to for various reasons but he grew on me by the end and I found him quite sweet once he’d accepted his feelings for Wren. The romance is quite high-steam but had a sweet side that I quite enjoyed.

I just struggled with some of Crew’s actions early on and some of the ways his friends talk about women. I also thought there was a questionable attitude towards sex and virginity in the book - it’s sort of addressed through Wren’s exploration of her own sexual desire but I wasn’t very keen on Crew’s possessive attitude about it. A lot of it just felt muddled to me and there were little lines etc. that felt like they were missed in an edit.

I also felt the characters read a little older than high school in terms of how they talked and so on. I genuinely think this plot could have been moved to a fancy college and it would have worked just the same. Anyway, I’ve mainly come to the conclusion that I wasn’t the target audience for this book and I nearly DNF a few times on that basis. I would read something by this author again but would probably read through reviews a bit more.
