while it wasn't "bad", it wasn't good either. Incredibly bland characters, in constant life-or-death situations that give no opportunity for the reader to emotionally connect to them, so we don't actually care. And the classic "horror movie" shtick of a bad guy getting killed only to keep coming back was beyond annoying. If it weren't for the context of the French Revolution, I'd slot this books writing for that of a 9 year old.
