Intimacies by Lucy Caldwell

4.25

After reading and loving Multitudes last year, I was excited to get my hands on this new Lucy Caldwell collection. In Intimacies she writes emotion so delicately, dealing with themes around womanhood with compassion and honesty. I also really appreciated the fact that Caldwell zooms in and out from personal stories to current social issues—each one feels very much like a window into a life that continues beyond the pages. All in all, comforting portrayals of various women, fittingly dedicated to her own daughter.

Personal favourites were ‘Like This,’ ‘People Tell You Everything,’ and ‘Night Walking’. As an English literature student, I also appreciated the references throughout to other poems, texts, and authors.
