Antimatter Blues by Edward Ashton
Did not finish book. Stopped at 33%.
Having read Mickey7 not too long ago, I was hesitant in starting this. 100 pages into Antimatter Blues and I can not get myself to go any further.
The problem that I find with this space adventure is this: why are they so unprepared and where is the adventure? Our main characters have settled down in a new environment and for some unknown reason, no one on their team in the last 2 years since Mickey7 thought to explore their environment or try to communicate to the alien form outside. Expect for our main character of course. Even though his role in this very static environment was an Expendable and therefore it's not his job too. And even when other team members (his girlfriend) met these alien forms there was no "wow, look how well they adapted to our language" but in fact just hostile "I'm too cool for this" attitude. I am personally not drawn to this mindset.
This is going to sound weird but everything happens to the main character. The whole exploration team is useless expect for our main character and I can not see why that is the case considering the exploration crew was built off of skills. Where are they in use?
It was a very weak plot and I could not see our main character as brave but rather selfish. I understand his logic in not wanting to die again and uploading his new memories to another body, I respect it (to an extent), but it's just so weak to me. Our supporting character and our Expendable's girlfriend was, frankly, cringy. I just couldn't get into their relationship.
Overall, I would say, if you enjoyed the first book writing style and plot then that continues with Antimatter Blues. However, if you are like me and is not the biggest fan of Mickey7 then perhaps steer away from the second book.
