The Door to Lost Pages by Paul Di Filippo, Claude Lalumière

5.0

It's not very often that I give a 5 star rating. Even if I think that the book was great, written well and kept me reading the whole night it'll probably still get a 4 stars from me. For a book to get a 5 stars from me, it has to touch me, it has to be something I'll read over and over, it's something that I'll want to convert world for. The Door to Lost Pages is one of those books for me.
Now let me add a word of warning here. This little read isn't for everyone and it has its problems but I love it none the less.
Claude has made a novella here of smaller stories all linked to a little esoteric bookstore and those who run it. For me, it was as if Claude delved into my childhood dreams and wrote them down. As a child I loved my books. Bookstores/libraries were a type of holy ground for me. I dreamed of finding hidden secrets and wisdom within there covers. Claude gives his reader a quick sneak peak into a supernatural world(s) of a bookstore, it leaves us yearning to understand more of this world(s) he has created. And in that way you are without a doubt denied.
But for those of us that had these dreams as children, we can fill in the gaps he has so strategically left with our own imagination.
This book will from here out be a cherished part of my collection. If you find used bookstores holy and enjoy having your reality twisted a little definitely pick this up.
