Run Away with Me, Girl, Volume 1 by Battan
4.5
I had heard for a while that this series is sad and it sure is! I only read the first volume here the other day (and thanks to the library #2 is sitting on my desk) and it’s sad in really unexpected ways. Truly cannot identify with the societal pressures of marrying a man just because you should and truly cannot identify with taking someone back even as a friend who broke up with you years ago just because they wanted to give into heteronormativity. I do however understand the pressures of that sort of thing, especially in a society where you can’t even gay marry (as it was true for a lot of my adult life actually!) and especially the pressure that comes from pregnancy and (assumedly) her desire to keep it and how complex that could be.
A complex story with beautiful art that pulls at the ol’ heartstrings and as me who’s skittish of GL/yuri/WLW manga (I’m picky! And too many I’ve read fall into holes I don’t like) something that hurts in a realistic and thoughtful way definitely appeals to me.
