The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle

3.0

This story was very meta, calling to the reader's attention how fairy tales work and how heroes are made. It touched a lot on secret or hidden identities; the message seemed to be that we can fully realize our true power only when we are being our true selves (as in the case of the unicorn, Lir, Shmendrick).

It had funny little bits throughout, and I enjoyed the playfulness of the language.

But what I enjoyed most about this read is the physical object of the book. I checked out an old copy from the library. It's about 50 years old and it has that old book smell and the pages were thick and soft and the font was that thick old-timey font that was prevalent in the late 60s.
