This book wasn’t at all what I expected—a doubly manipulative romance turned into a twisty thriller. I disliked it at first and turned around by the ending. I love Jane Eyre so much, and so this was a mixed bag: Full of fun easter eggs and references, but massively different characters. JE is all about character development and so all its characters are exquisite and work beautifully to become better people; the same characters here are stagnant and all a little bit awful (though deeply interesting). But Rachel Hawkins did what she always does so well: The plot is GREAT. By the end, nothing is what it’s looked like, and there’s a massively satisfying ending for all its characters. A fun one-day read :)
