Deadly Spells by Jaye Wells

4.0

This was yet another good book in the Prospero's War series. I'm starting to really feel at home in this world, and I'm enjoying the fact that, while the books are somewhat episodic in that they are each about a separate police case, the world and the characters in it are constantly growing and changing. There's a strongly-felt passing of time which really helps all this feel real to me as I move from one book to the next.

Again, I had to take a star away for bad editing. There were some typos and several instances of the same word being used multiple times too close together. There were also a couple instances of dialogue formatting being a little off, leading me to think one person was talking when it was another. These mistakes are few and far between and might not even be terribly obvious for someone who isn't into writing herself, but to me they stand out.

I also had one additional complaint, which was that there were a couple throw-away sentences scattered throughout the last few chapters of the book which were kind of slut-shamey or anti-sex worker. I don't think Jaye Wells really meant anything by it, but it rubbed me the wrong way a little bit when I read it.
