I absolutely adored the characters in this book and the world set up! My roommate can attest: I kept crying over how wholesome everyone in the world was! Instead of having drama, bullies, and wicked villains, there was peace, understanding, and acceptance. The two main characters were absolutely wonderful!
I want to give this book 5 stars because I loved the characters so  much, but the pacing drove me wild. Especially in the middle passage of the book, the tense searches were continually undercut by slow, pastoral flashbacks. I felt thrashed back and forth between those moments and eventually just started skimming the flashbacks in order to get to the ending of the book. It was infuriating, because I would have enjoyed those scenes if they came at a different time in the novel
I’m not the target audience, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. But I also think that middle-grade me would have also been very impatient with this book
