The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

1.0

While the beginning of the book really intrigued me, about a quarter of the way in it just falls apart. Lacking plot, it tries to center itself around its main character Pat Peoples. Unfortunately Pat is a narcissistic, sports and ex-wife obsessed crazy person. Despite all of these flaws that may have made for a more interesting character in the hands of a different writer, Quick makes him into a completely two dimensional and gratingly annoying individual after a short period of time. I really wish the book had focused more on what kind of mental illness that Pat was suffering from, it never felt fully fleshed out, and addressed the brain damage that he must have sustained from the mysterious incident that causes him to be in a neural rehabilitation facility at the start of the book. Unfortunately Quick never delivers this, and I was just left generally wanting.
