An Actor Prepares by Konstantin Stanislavski

challenging informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

Took me a year or possibly even a bit more to finish this. It was better this way. With this book it is needed to take your time. It is also needed to practice the concepts in real life. I do theatre and this year we studied and practiced drama and the Stanislavski method. The exercises we did were crucial in helping me understand this book because I could trace what was being said to my own experience. Had I read some chapters earlier I would miss so much of the essense. It would just go over my head as I think so many things in the first chapters did when I had the least experience in the method. I also found that especially in the latter chapters it was very difficult for me to read more than 10 pages at a time. My brain shut off after that point.
I did feel sometimes things were repeated but I didn't mind that at all.
Moreover, I loved the format it was written in. Like I was attending his lesson myself through having insight in both the thoughts of students, the teacher and the narration of the practice itself. Many times questions posed by students I would have asked myself.
Lastly, what I have concluded is that everything needs to come from you. No teacher or other actor can make you understand this if you don't find out the meaning of it by yourself and through yourself while practicing. Amazing book.
