The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

4.0

I've never been a fan of the crime genre in general. Sometimes, the writing of your typical crime novel (to account for the dignity of the offenders concerned, they shall remain nameless) is sluggish, bland, and as the story progresses, often reliant on cheap, hardly necessary twists, gimmicks and MacGuffins.
However, from the very beginning, The Thursday Murder Club just feels... different.
Richard Osman absolutely outdid himself here, providing a funny, likeable and interesting narrative voice, as well as brief interludes from the primary protagonist, Joyce, that bring a heartwarming believability to proceedings. The grim nature of the cases the titular pensioners solve is juxtaposed with anecdotes of each of the four protagonists' lives, and a general sense of mild-mannered British-ness.
Sometimes, the writing does feel a little hammy and sentimental, but generally, this was an absolutely fantastic read!
