The Forgotten 500: The Untold Story of the Men Who Risked All for the Greatest Rescue Mission of World War II by Gregory A. Freeman

4.0

This is a must read if you are interested in all WWII history as I am. I did not know this story of the rescue of over 500 US and Allied serviceman who had gone down over Yugoslavia during bombing runs. The author tells how the rural Yugoslavians treated the service man like heros, feeding them what little food they had and hiding them from the Nazis until a plan could be hatched to rescue them. The plan was to gather the service men together, build an air strip and fly cargo planes into enemy territory without clueing in the Nazis. Great book.
