A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

4.0

A Christmas Carol was my holiday read this year and after starting it, I thought maybe it should have been my Halloween read. This is a very atmospheric book with very dark and scary descriptions…from the blinding fog, to his dead partner’s face in the knocker, and the ghosts themselves, I wasn’t expecting such dark imagery.

I loved the whole idea of an individual visiting their past, present, and future. It was a clever way to put Scrooge’s character on display. If people had such insight into themselves, would they make changes and live happier lives?

I did not quite understand the characteristics of the ghost of the present and whether his attributes were symbolic of something bigger (past & present were clearer to me). I did not like that the ghost of the future did not speak and wondered why Dickens did not give him a voice. I also wanted more backstory on why Scrooge became such a curmudgeon and more on the great wealth divide.

While written well with nicely placed humor, I found some of the descriptions to be almost rambling like unedited streams of consciousness.

Overall, I enjoyed the moral of the story and Scrooge’s transformation (although he acted a bit too crazed). The final stave with his transformation was very quick.
