The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
5.0
Here's the deal: there is no reason on Earth for me to like this book. It is insanely long, it is at times somewhat repetitive, the characters' sensibilities are at times absurdly modern, and it is about religion, a human creation for which I have little interest or emotional tie, barring a trace of contempt.
BUT . . . I loved it. I can't help myself. There is something wonderful about it. I could not put it down, and I was sad when I reached the conclusion.
