I adore the magic system and the way its tied into Chinese mythology and its culture.
However I have to say I didn't really like Ning all that much. I don't hate her by any means, she's a good character, but the way the book was written didn't give justice to the amount of talent that she posesses.Especially in the beginning, it felt a lot more like she was relying on luck rather than skill in the first two challenges of the competition, which felt like a waste.
Romance kind of came out of left field. It's cute, but I don't feel like Bo is around enough to give any true development or weight to it.
It's not a bad book at all, was easy to read, just wished the author went a bit more into the smaller details. It's got really good, strong bones. Just doesn't have the meat.
