I found this book to be personally challenging to read. The writing is beautiful and I believe Austin has accurately captured the way thought jumps from one puddle to the next and the absolute undisguised despair of being viciously depressed and mentally ill. But it is the depiction of mental illness, as a mentally ill person, that made it hard: Gilda is relatable in the ways I’m most ashamed of. I would say if you have had suicidal ideation, approach this book with caution as Gilda has suicidal thoughts several time . That said, I do find Gilda to be terribly kind heart and I cannot help but feel for her struggle.
Graphic: Mental illness, Panic attacks/disorders, Suicidal thoughts, Grief, and Schizophrenia/Psychosis
Moderate: Alcoholism and Car accident
Minor: Animal death, Blood, Vomit, Religious bigotry, and Murder
