The Bluff by Willa Nash, Devney Perry

“The peace wasn’t in this meadow. It wasn’t the grass or the flowers or the trees. The peace was at Everly’s side.”

I always love a marriage of convenience story, especially when the male character is a grump like Reese Huxley. Everly Christian has lived in Calamity, Montana ever since she came to visit her best friend (Lucy from The Bribe) and had a life-threatening incident. She’s still shook up and kept to herself, so when she wanders out on the town one night, she is pleasantly surprised to meet Reese.

One night turns into some more, but they both agreed to keep things strictly platonic. Neither of them, especially Reese, wants a relationship his last left him a nasty divorce and a lost custody battle. Reese has continued to fight for his rights to his teenaged daughter though, and his newest suggestion from his lawyer is to have a positive female influence in the house- enter Everly. She offers to marry Hux and although they were hoping nothing would change, things obviously do.

The new couple has to face the custody battle for Hux’s daughter, the town gossip, the ex-wife, and living together. Hux and Everly try very hard to keep things strictly physical, but they both develop feelings and keep them hidden. When things get brought to light in Hux’s personal life, Everly has to make a decision for the both of them on how to move forward when he doesn’t trust her.

“His heart was a mirror image of mine, the missing piece.”

Hux truly has so many walls up after his divorce that also left him without his daughter. He has always been adamant on absolutely no relationships or letting anyone in. Everly is well aware and doesn’t try to change this outlook, but she falls for him anyway. She just wants him to get his daughter back and help out where she can. She has such a great personality because she doesn’t let Hux steamroll her and doesn’t put up with his grumpy attitude. I loved the couple as a whole and individually.
