Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
5.0
This is so up my alley in so many ways. The slow burn of the horror underlying the story, the decayed elegance of the setting, possible madness, the nods to so many of my favorite things: fairy tales, the Yellow Wallpaper, cosmic horror, mushrooms as creep fuel.
The writing is tight, the characters are well-drawn (I won't say believable because this is quite the fantasy), and the author must be a spider because many other shoes drop throughout the book.
I had a ton of fun keeping track of the timeline and second-guessing myself and whether or not I had remembered something correctly.
I will not read everything by Moreno-Garcia, thanks.
