The Once and Future King by T.H. White

3.0

This novel follows young King Arthur from childhood through to adulthood. It is divided into four "books", starting with the Sword in the Stone.

Anybody who enjoyed the Disney movie, the Sword in the Stone, will enjoy this book, as the movie is loosely based on this book. This book has the same humour and fantastical elements as the movie, and it really was wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed the play on words and the marvelous characters and how they were represented. This was pure 5 star material.

Once I moved past this book though, and into the latter books, that was where it lost me. I simply got bored. I mean, it was great learning about Lancelot and Guinevere, but the book just couldn't hold my attention. I am sad to say that I gave up at the end of the third book. It was just way too long.

It is a pity that I have ended up giving this book only 3 stars, but the end of the story has brought down my initial 5 star rating.

The first book is well worth the read though, and I highly recommend it!
