Die #1 by Kieron Gillen

5.0

Once again, Kieron Gillen shows why he's my favourite comic book writer. I don't feel like I can say much about the comic yet, as the series is only really getting going, but what a start! The sales pitch of "Goth Jumanji" doesn't do it justice. There's bleakness in this book, the feeling of having to grow up and leave nerdy things behind. But there's hope too. Despite them bickering for most of the volume, I really got the sense of the warmth and friendship between our protagonists. Plenty of D&D references too, which made my nerdy heart happy. And that ending...I could see it coming, but still. Emotionally devastating. Can't wait to see where this story goes!

The art in this is just gorgeous too, there's some stunning whole page spreads that I just want to take out and frame and it really fits the fantastical worldbuilding.
