The Practicing Mind: Bringing Discipline and Focus into Your Life by Thomas M. Sterner

2.0

The Practicing Mind by Thomas M. Sterner feels like another trite book that I skimmed while waiting at the dentist. The premise of the book is that all our life is practice in one form or another. When we actively practicing something, it is quite different from passively learning which is the most common form. A few points that stood out, most are quotes:

• The goal is not the destination or where you end up, but rather the compass that guides the journey.
• “When we subtly shift toward both focusing on and finding joy in the process of achieving instead of having the goal, we have gained a new skill."
• “If you are not in control of your thoughts, then you are not in control of yourself.”
• “We erroneously think that there is a magical point that we will reach and then we will be happy.”
• “We waste so much of our energy by not being aware of how we are directing it.”
• “The real thrill of acquiring anything, whether it is an object or a personal goal, is your anticipation of the moment of receiving it."
• “Our concepts of ideal and perfect are always changing.”
• “Wisdom is not a by-product of age. Teach and learn from all those around you.”
