conceptually and intellectually an awesome book and wonderful to think with, but this was a terrible reading experience. avant-garde but not in the way that is awe-inspiring and expansive. i could tell without much knowledge of the french text that the translation probably has a lot to do with my reading experience, as using “elles” in french is a much more grammatically rebellious decision than the translators choice of “women”. the notion of gender warfare and the ideas that wittig puts forth in the book are stunning and can definitely make the book worth reading if you’re willing to go deeper than the text.
