Into the Bright Unknown by Rae Carson

3.0

... and the end. I liked this series, although it didn't have the same "wow" factor as [b:The Girl of Fire and Thorns|10429092|The Girl of Fire and Thorns (Fire and Thorns, #1)|Rae Carson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1323448113l/10429092._SY75_.jpg|13282366]. Here, Uncle Hiram isn't really the issue (although Frank is still around), but the big boss is the one Lee and her crew have to deal with.

Much of the story here is as the crew goes to try to reclaim Becky Joiner's house, which had been shipped. It was interesting to uncover the types of deceptions that those in power could do to keep raking in the money, at the expense of everyone else.

A few things were a little too convenient. Characters introduced fairly randomly, that then played a part in crucial events. In addition to Lee's "gold sense" there is another little paranormal power at play.

I really liked the audio narration here. The slight southern twang. The men's voices were really well done, and at times I'd forget that it was actually a woman narrating it all. I looked up Erin Mallon's other works, but had only listened to her before in [b:Sweet Evil|11808950|Sweet Evil (Sweet, #1)|Wendy Higgins|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1337613719l/11808950._SY75_.jpg|16762455], which I didn't like (it wasn't the narration, it was the story).
