Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson

4.0

Pure middle grade magic (in an entirely non-magical realistic graphic novel).

Lovable pre-teen Astrid figures out some big deal problems in this enjoyable, heartfelt comic. For example! Friendships are not easy, especially when you're 12 years old and your best friend and you suddenly have diverging interests. Roller derby looks super fun and exciting, but actually takes a lot of practice, hard work, and willingness to fall the heck down. Moms work hard and care deeply for their kids, and really don't like being lied to. Bleaching your hair is a painful process. And many more important life lessons!

For fans of
Raina Telgemeier, obviously
Roller Derby, obviously, and other bad ass girl sports

Read Alikes, or if you liked, you should also try
This One Summer by Tamaki
Giant Days (on the older range, high school + . nothing naughty, but sexuality is discussed)

More magical than realism but
Lumberjanes (which I didn't 100% love but is close enough in age and genre interest)
Super Mutant Magic Academy
Nimona because YESSSSS
