Gypsy Boy: My Life in the Secret World of the Romany Gypsies by Mikey Walsh

4.0

4.5 stars

This is a great book. It's a memoir that follows the author through his childhood as he grows up in the Romani community in England, and it's very depressing, but touches your heart. It's the type of book that makes you realize just how lucky you really are.

I saw another review that mentioned that this book makes Roma look bad, and I somewhat agree, but at the same time this is just one person sharing their story. It is true that this book paints the Roma as lying, cheating, thieves but that is also the experience that the author had. The point is that no matter how bad a certain group looks, you never use that to justify your hatred towards an entire race of people.

The reason why this is 4.5 stars and not 5 is because some of the writing in this could be a little confusing and sometimes I had to reread a sentence to even understand it, but that could also be because the author is from England and speaks a different dialect of English. The author also missed out on a lot of schooling and didn't know how to properly write for the first ~15 years of his life, so there's that.
