In Five Years by Rebecca Serle

3.0

I finished this book and threw it angrily onto the floor. It was an easy read. The premise was enough to hook me. The main character, Dannie, gets engaged and lands her dream job all on the same day and then has a dream or premonition where she experiences an hour in her own life five years ahead. She's with a different man in a different apartment and she actually feels passion (for the first time ever??). It's enough to make her think for a REALLY long time whether she ought to get married.

The best character in the book, the one with the joie de vivre, is Bella, and she knows how to live her life. The other characters are joyless, stagnant......successful in their careers......but otherwise joyless and stagnant. The author plays with the reader's emotions through the guise of a young person getting a devastating disease.

The ending, although maybe realistic, is gloomy and dissatisfying. Nobody gets what they want. And that great hook! So much unrealized potential! Why not a little more magical realism? Ugh. Not recommended.
