This just became my favourite book of the year on the last day of the year.

This story made me feel so seen and reminded me of why I loved Zevin’s books growing up. This is for the betas with a little alpha in them and the alphas that enjoy a bit of beta. The story was sweet, the game references clever and the friendship. Oh, the friendship. The bond between Marx and Sam reminded me of Willem and Jude in A Little Life. The game references were giving me a bit of Ready Player One, but more poetic. I loved how the writing style changed along with Sam and Sadie’s lives and I want to play all of the games from Unfair Games! Zevin shows her amazing skill in building worlds in the game designs, and they’re so incredibly inclusive. It got me back into gaming too. I couldn’t have wished for a better read to end the year!
