Don't Forget To Breathe by Cathrina Constantine
Did not finish book. Stopped at 7%.
I, at first, found the premise of the book to be quite promising. However, merely two chapters into the story I decided to drop it — the writing style was less than mediocre, with an amateurish and almost juvenile voice. I tried to push past it, but the more I read, the more obvious it became that it hadn’t been an isolated sloppy scene, but it was just the writer’s permanent style. I also found one of the two characters introduced in the first chapter (who then appears also in the second one) to be absolutely revolting. In his very first appearance, he forces himself upon the main character, and the following day, he tells her he just “doesn’t take rejection very well”, as if that was an excuse for him to go ballistic after she finally escapes him. I am well aware that this dynamic must be definitely explored in the rest of the book, but I simply couldn’t deal with a story where the main character’s aggressor doesn’t even really apologize and then both of them act as if nothing had ever happened. I do not usually leave novels unfinished, but I couldn’t realistically see myself enjoying this story.
Moderate: Sexual assault
