“Dreams aren’t for people like me. People like me have to make two lists: what they need and what they want. You keep the first list short, if you’re smart, and you burn the second one.”
Opal lives in a motel room, responsible for her younger brother, she is drawn to the mysterious Starling House where she takes on a job to pay for her brother's education.
I haven't had a book blow my socks off like Starling House for a while. the creepy, gothic writing style, but with a contemporary setting in a town I could really imagine.
Opal is a really complex character, one of those tough cookie-soft centre types. The plot felt slow to start with, but suddenly all these new little bits and pieces worm their way in and before you know it, you have a complex story and I couldn't put it down.
What a book, what an ending!
