A Rake's Midnight Kiss by Anna Campbell

3.0

Pretty standard romance novel, not much that’s remarkable or a stand-out. The introduction of the villain – a much older scholar/collector whom the reader and the hero realize almost instantly also has lecherous intentions towards the heroine – was vaguely annoying, mostly because the heroine determinedly ignores any inkling that he could have Foul Intent. In this era of #metoo, I found that surprisingly stressful to read, particularly since the plot takes the standard, unsurprising course and
Spoilerthe heroine gets kidnapped and nearly raped
. Additionally, while there were the requisite number of sex scenes, the setting/timing of one of them really irritated me:
Spoilerkidnapped, in the hero's case shot (with the bullet still in him - and remember, it's the early nineteenth century), locked in a sealed crypt (which smells of ancient dead monks), and waiting for death
, that's totally the perfect time to get it on, right? Come on!
