WWII true story. Pino Lella is a young man from Milan Italy. He gets drug into the war when his home is bombed then he is sent to live at Casa Alpina with Father Re. At Casa Alpina he helps Jews escape to Switzerland as part of the resistance. A week or so before his 18th birthday his parents have him come back to their new home to convince his to enlist in the German army. He reluctantly obliges. He gets injured and becomes a driver for General Hans Leyers, Hitler’s left hand man. As he does this he relays information about what he sees to his aunt and uncle to give to the Allies. He falls in love with Anna-Marta. When the war is almost over, they get engaged and will marry after the war. Anna is a maid for Dolly, General Leyers mistress, and for this she is considered to have committed treason. The partisans declare her to die by firing squad and Pino is almost forced to watch as she is brought out before a crowd in a bra and underwear and shot dead. Pino tussles with her memory for many years before he realizes he should celebrate her life instead of mourn her death.
