The Stormchasers, by Jenna Blum

5.0

I picked this book up at the dollar store (because I was curious about the type of books they sold at the dollar store) and I honestly expected this book to be terrible. I mean, why else would it be at the dollar store? And for the first two chapters The Stormchasers stayed true to my expectations. The writing was choppy and simple. But please don't let this stop you from reading this.

I was surprised when the main character set off on her journey because it became a beautiful read. The main character was very well developed and the landscape, even though I was just reading it, was breathtaking. Part of the reason I chose this book was because of the subject of tornadoes and stormchasing, subjects that fascinate me, and I am pleased to say that these they were captured and used expertly in the writing; they were transformed into more than a natural disaster in a truly unique way.

Blum even flashes back to the past for a chunk of the book in the middle, a smooth transition that allows the reader to delve deeper into the minds and history of the complex and captivating twin siblings that are featured in this book.

It's a great fictional work that gives new perspective on mental illness, which the main character's twin brother struggles with. Blum is a master at describing the unstoppable force of some of humanities beautiful tragedies.
