Square³ by Mira Grant

3.0

My love of the sci-fi horror genre most often revolves around a sense of dreaded discovery, something fantastically accomplished by Mira Grants 2017 release, Into the Drowning Deep. However, in her novella Square³, the thrill of the hunt is distinctly lacking. Instead, the narrative is cleanly cut into exciting events and subsequent exposition. Its opening chapters are perhaps the clearest example of this. A harrowing event that sees the opening of monster filled rifts separating our two main characters, sisters, and the following time jump that reveals one of them is now an expert in a new rift studying field and can provide the necessary information to settle us into the story. All this to say, Mira Grant is a fantastic genre writer and, even when the novella too often provides answers over questions, I still found Square³ to be a fantastic sliver of a greater world.
