Midnight Awakening by Lara Adrian

4.0

In Midnight Awakening, we are introduced to Tegan and Elise's romance. They both come from a past of great loss and are both, at first, very far from wanting another relationship. But they have a hard time denying the feelings they have blooming for each other ever since a few months prior, when Tegan drove her home after some very hard times.

In this book, Tegan finds a soft spot for Elise and Elise's hot vengeance rage is cooled by Tegan's touch. It's a beautiful romance between them that is realistic, but at the same time has some flaws.

First of all, it's a little hard to believe that Tegan has refused to fall in love for 500 years, and that Elise get's him to fall in love with her within a matter of days. Although, I know, it's a romance novel and that is inevitably going to happen. But 500 years is many lifetimes and for him to not meet anyone before her that would have sparked so much as a bout of lust, is a little unbelievable. He may be a tortured vampire, but he is still a male and I don't really believe he could go 500 years without sex.

But anywho, aside from that, I really liked Tegan. When I first started reading this novel, I was kind of under the misunderstanding that he might be a lot like Zsadist from the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. That would have been fine, considering how much I love Zsadist. But Tegan was a far cry from him. Although tortured from losing his first love, he was not nearly as hard-edged as Zsadist - in my opinion. This wasn't necessarily a BAD thing. But, it showed that Lara Adrian was not trying to create a carbon copy of Zsadist in any way. Tegan was his own character for sure. But I was a bit disappointed at how soft he seemed, even in the beginning. In the previous books it seemed like would have been a much different character than he was when put into focus.

In addition, I really liked Elise's character. She is very strong willed and willing to take care of certain things herself. However, she is not that annoying kind of strong willed woman who doesn't like having her man help her too. I liked the nice middle ground she held.

One thing that I thought was really missing in this book though, was the sex scenes. There were a couple, but not really detailed ones at all. It seemed a little bland because of that. I think that's why, even now, I like the Black Dagger Brotherhood series better than this one. Because in that series, there is a lot more sex and the characters are a little less cardboard. I'm not saying I don't like this series, but it still doesn't even come close to J.R. Ward's world, if you ask me.

Overall, I liked the story. But if I had to compare it to the first two books, I'd say it was a little more bland. The first two books had more action and conflict going on. While there was some action at the end of the book, the beginning and middle of the book was a little slow. The death of a big character happened way too fast, and Elise wasn't even put into a compromising position, as most heroine's usually are.

I did like it though, just not as much as the first ones. I will be continuing the series and I'm looking forward to Rio's story next. It'll be interesting to see what kind of woman will be able to break through the hard shell he's created for himself now.
