Oh Danny Boy by Rhys Bowen

3.0

Daniel is in jail, for accepting a bribe, and he reaches out to Molly. She's been determined to avoid him, after they were intimate in the last book and she then discovered him with Arabella Norton, his fiancee with whom he'd promised to cut ties, but she relents once she finds out he's in jail. Molly has a hunch his imprisonment is connected to one of the cases he was working on, and she eventually discovers it's due to the
SpoilerEastside Ripper case, a killer who's been targeting prostitutes. She winds up befriending Police Matron Sabella Goodwin, who turns out to be a rather good person to know. Sabella and Molly agree on a great many things, and Sabella can uncover info Molly couldn't find out on her own. In a side plot, Arabella comes to Molly for help locating her BFF who's disappeared - it seems the lady has jilted her fiance and run off with another man, but Arabella doesn't buy it. The cases turn out to be intersected, as the fiance is a police detective named Carter. Arabella's friend is missing because Carter has her killed, not wanting to be committed to her. He has a partnership with a psychopath who works in one of the Coney Island side shows, and they're the Eastside Ripper.

In a sad story line, Molly finds herself pregnant from her last encounter with Daniel. She considers an abortion but winds up leaving the woman's house, unable to go through with it. She's in danger at the end of the book, trying to escape Carter, and winds up having a miscarriage
