Everybody's Doin' It: Sex, Music, and Dance in New York, 1840-1917 by Dale Cockrell
Did not finish book. Stopped at 11%.
I learnt things in the bit I read, about relationships between black people, blackfaced white people, and black people pretending to be white people in blackface, as well as the rise of black performers as entertainers especially in dance and song.
But it started dragging for me and wasn't the nicest thing to read about. I think it's very good as historical but I like books that help me to reflect upon current things using learnings from the past.
That's what I mostly want from books, and books that don't help me to do that end up shifting a big cognitive burden onto me to get the same experience from reading.
And as Rosie says life is limited the amount of books you can read is limited so you have to triage.
